Level I Basic Climbing Instructor Training, First Half of Level II Certification

May 5, 6 & 7, 2017

Basic Climbing Instructor Training for Adults (18 and over).  If you are 21 or will be 21 by September 2017 you need this course as the first step in becoming a Level II instructor.  If you do not take this class you cannot become a Level II instructor 2017.   

Youth 16 – 17 that are prospective summer camp staff may attend with Director Approval.

FEE: $65.00 (Fee is non-refundable, but transferable, and includes training materials and food.)


Gorham Scout Ranch, north of Santa Fe, NM

**** Course starts at 8 AM Friday Morning****

This basic course is for adults (18 ) interested in becoming a Trained Level I Climbing Instructor and will take place at Gorham Scout Ranch’s Climbing facilitates.  You must be a registered Scout or Scouter and at least 18 years old to take this course. This is a three-day course per BSA regulations.  Time and facilities for worship will be provided on Sunday morning. The course fee includes materials, and food (except for Friday breakfast and Friday lunch).  The instructor training card is good for 1 (one) year. This course is a prerequisite for the BSA Level II Climbing Instructor Course.

The deadline for signing up for this course is April 30, 2017

Knots used during your training will include:

Figure 8 ~ Figure 8 follow-through ~ Figure 8 on-a-bight ~ Water Knot ~ Double Fisherman’s Knot ~ Prusik

To save class time, please take the time to learn and practice the knots prior to your arrival. The Climbing Merit Badge Booklet is a good reference for these knots.  There are also several good web sites dedicated to knot tying.


BSA # 680-001 (or current) medical form filled out and signed by a doctor - Required!  No exceptions!

  • A positive attitude!
  • Optional: Helmet, harness and climbing shoes (Climbing). Personal equipment must be inspected by a Director.  (Please do not bring any personal or unit climbing hardware).
  • Tent, sleeping bag and pad, hiking boots, daypack, water bottle and other personal equipment
  • Please eat Friday breakfast before arriving at camp and bring a sack lunch with you for Friday.
  • Rain gear and clothing suitable for the New Mexico weather – Long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended!
  • New or nearly new leather gloves (no excessive dirt)

**** Course start at 8 AM Friday Morning****

WE WILL “CAMP” in an available camp site. Check in with the course director at the dining hall when you first arrive at camp, and then park in the parking lot (facing the road, of course) after unloading your gear in the camping area. Feel free to arrive at camp on Thursday evening (Bring your own food for Thursday evening, Friday breakfast and lunch). Classes will begin promptly at 8 AM Friday morning at the dining hall.  We will try to conclude the training by 4:00 PM on Sunday. Water will be available at the dinning hall.
